A Parisian Mystery in Metal: Tracing Saint Maron's Reliquary
This study on the Reliquary Head of Saint Maron in Paris combines historical research with forensic analysis to offer insights into the history of the saint's skull. Tracing its journey from 5th-century Cyrrhus in ancient Syria to 8th-century Kfar-Hay in Lebanon, 12th-century Sassovivo in Italy, and finally to 21st-century Paris, the study uncovers details about its veneration and relocation. The movement of Saint Maron's skull reflects a broader historical trend of relocating relics due to theological, political, and social shifts. The Crusaders' role in the transfer of relics, particularly during their campaigns in the Levant, significantly reshaped the religious landscape of both the East and the West. The presence of Saint Maron's reliquary in Paris today continues this legacy, shedding light on the enduring significance of sacred artifacts in historical and contemporary religious contexts.
