Mormon Polygamy and American Law in the 19th Century

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a religion founded in post-Revolution America. Back in the 19th century, some Saints, or commonly known as Mormons, would follow the religious law of plural marriage, where men would marry multiple women. However, the Mormon church in the present does not have this practice. What made the Mormons remove this law from their religion?
