Analysis of the Galvanic Corrosion Effect of High-Potential Metal Piping Systems on Hull Steel Structures

In order to investigate the galvanic corrosion behavior mechanism between piping systems and hull structures, focusing on the galvanic corrosion issues of titanium alloy piping systems in naval ship applications, a comprehensive comparative analysis of the galvanic corrosion effects on hull steel structures caused by titanium alloy and copper alloy piping systems was conducted using electrochemical testing, corrosion simulation calculations and model corrosion experiments. Results showed that the galvanic potentials of the ZTi60, TC4, TA5 and hull steel couples eventually stabilized at approximately-0.60,-0.68 and-0.61 V, respectively, with the final stable galvanic current densities being 5.58, 10.11 and 5.84 μA/cm2, respectively.Notably, the final stable current densities of the copper alloy couples were significantly higher than those of the titanium alloy couples. Both titanium alloy and copper alloy piping systems exhibited galvanic corrosion effects when coupled with hull steel structures, necessitating effective electrical insulation measures.Nonetheless, the galvanic corrosion effect of the titanium alloy piping system and steel hull structure was not more pronounced than that of the copper alloy piping system and steel hull structure.
