Expanding Communication Skills through Phrasal Verbs = 句動詞を活用したコミュニケーションスキルの向上

Phrasal verbs (PVs) play a crucial role in the English language, allowing for a dynamic and nuanced expression of actions and ideas (Navruzova, 2024). Consequently, PVs present a wide array of variability both in terms of syntax and semantics, making them challenging for ESL learners to comprehend. There are a few studies that attempt to straddle different areas of research to offer a wider, more beneficial guide to PVs for learners and educators. For example, studies such as Gardner and Davies (2007) and Garnier and Schmitt (2015) offer learners and instructors lists of the most common PVs, which could be used as a guide for studying PVs, but teaching methods and instruction were outside of the scope of their work. With the aim of addressing gaps in teaching strategies, this research offers several ways PVs can be taught and shares teaching techniques and strategies. Motivation to study or practice PVs is not a priority when a vast majority of students’ efforts for learning English is directed towards passing written tests or entrance examinations. Until Japanese students are made aware of the benefits of learning and understanding PVs, communication with native speakers will remain challenging.
