Sacrificial anodic performance of Mg-1Er-1Gd/Nd 2 O 3 composite via friction stir processing
Magnesium-rare earth (Mg-RE) alloys are being researched for use as sacrificial anodes, despite the fact that their high corrosion rate, render them unsuitable for practical consumption. In this study, we investigate the effects of surface compositing of Mg-1Er-1Gd with nano phase Nd 2 O 3 through friction stir processing on the microstructural development and sacrificial anodic performance. The microstructure, microhardness, and electrochemical properties of the alloy and fabricated surface composite are analyzed in this work. Advanced instrumental characterization techniques were utilized to study phase evolution and corrosion kinetics. The surface composited specimen demonstrates a 156.6% higher anodic efficiency compared to the base material and exhibits the lowest anode consumption rate of 8.108 × 10 −4 kg/Ah in electrochemical performance tests.
