The Restoring Force\nTriangle: A Mnemonic Device for\nPolymer Mechanochemistry
In polymer mechanochemistry, mechanophores\nare specific\nmolecular\nunits within the macromolecular backbone that are particularly sensitive\nto tension. To facilitate understanding of this selective responsiveness,\nwe introduce the restoring force triangle (RFT). The RFT is a mnemonic\ndevice intended to provide intuitive insight into how external tensile\nforces (i.e., stretching) can selectively activate scissile bonds,\nthereby initiating mechanically driven chemical reactions. The RFT\nutilizes two easily computable parameters: the effective bond stiffness\nconstant, which measures a bond’s resistance to elongation,\nand the bond dissociation energy, which is the energy required to\nbreak a bond. These parameters help categorize reactivity into thermal\nand mechanical domains, providing a useful framework for developing\nnew mechanophores that are responsive to force but thermally stable.\nThe RFT helps chemists intuitively understand how tensile force contributes\nto the activation of a putative mechanophore, facilitating the development\nof mechanochemical reactions and mechano-responsive materials.
