Soil Erosion in the Vjosa River Watershed in Albania. Problems and Protective Measures

\nThe sustainability of the Vjosa River, like any ecosystem, is influenced by a variety of natural factors and interventions. The purpose of this study is to analyse the level, factors, economic, social and environmental consequences of erosion in the watershed of the Vjosa river and the alternatives of protection, further prevention of soil erosion, through good governance of the territory. In 2023, the river was declared “National Park” category II. Vjosa is one of the main rivers of the country, originating from the territory of Greece, with a length of 272 km, an average height of 855 m and two main branches (Drinos & Shushica). watershed area 6704 km2, of which 4365 km2 in the country. Increasing temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events due to climate change pose significant challenges to the Vjosa River’s sustainability. he Vjosa River provides essential ecosystem services such as water provisioning, nutrient cycling, and recreational opportunities. Sustainable management practices can enhance these services, ensuring they continue to benefit both nature and human societies.\n
