The theme of memory in its links with Portuguese history and identity runs through much of José Saramago’s fiction, but unlike his contemporaries, Saramago does not directly address the colonial empire or its historical end in his fiction. This essay sets out to investigate Africa in Saramago’s work, taking up the critical readings of this topic by Maria Alzira Seixo, Ronald W. Sousa, Paulo de Medeiros, Pedro Oliveira Neto and Ana Paula Ferreira, and then looking to the political texts, written during the time when Saramago was assistant director of the daily newspaper Diário de Notícias (between April and November 1975, in the midst of the Ongoing Revolutionary Process), for clues not only to understand this absence, but also to identify the questions that guided his writings.
