José Saramago em correspondência: vestígios de uma vida antes do Nobel

Before achieving success as a writer, José Saramago, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature, translated more than fifty books and worked at Editorial Estúdios Cor between 1959 and 1971. There he was as a production manager, translator and proofreader, becoming an agent in the Portuguese publishing scene. In this paper, the writer's biography will be briefly traced to understand the origins of his work as a translator, and some of the letters he exchanged while working at Estúdios Cor will be analyzed. The aim is to study the role that Saramago played in the publishing process, namely in planning collections, commissioning and proofreading translations, and thus contribute to Translator Studies in Portugal.

Abstract

Before achieving success as a writer, José Saramago, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature, translated more than fifty books and worked at Editorial Estúdios Cor between 1959 and 1971. There he was as a production manager, translator and proofreader, becoming an agent in the Portuguese publishing scene. Antes de obter reconhecimento como escritor, José Saramago, Prémio Nobel da Literatura 1998, traduziu mais de cinquenta livros e trabalhou, entre 1959 e 1971, na Editorial Estúdios Cor.
