Supplementary Materials for Fault segmentation controls seismotectonic variability before major earthquakes on the East Anatolian Fault

<p dir="ltr">Understanding seismotectonic activity preceding major earthquakes is crucial for improving hazard assessment and fault mechanics. We investigate the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Mw≥7.6 earthquake doublet along the East Anatolian Fault (EAF) in Türkiye, comparing it with two earlier Mw≥6.1 events. Our analysis reveals distinct pre-rupture behaviors: the northeastern EAF segments, with linear fault traces and slip rates up to ~7 mm/a, exhibit significant creep and concentrated seismic moment at mainshock epicenters months before rupture. In contrast, the southwestern EAF segments, with slower slip (~0.7 mm/a) and complex segmentation, show diffuse pre-mainshock activity characterized by weak or null seismic moment correlation with mainshock epicenters. These findings highlight the importance of integrating seismotectonic characterization with continuous slip monitoring for real-time assessment of future earthquake timing and location.
