In nomine dei – O artigo “o fator deus” marxianamente encenado

This article is part of a group of studies on José Saramago as a reader of Karl Marx. In these pages, we ponder over the “God factor” cause, approaching it as a disturbing theme of Saramago, developed in his works over the foundation of “ideology” as a category under Marxist thought. This premise supports the conclusion that the essay “The God factor”, published in the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, which elucidates that “everything has been allowed precisely because of and justified in the name of God” (Saramago, 2001), and the aesthetic making of the theatre play In nomineDei (1993) are both enlightened by the following quote from Karl Marx: “men make their own history, but they do not make it just as they please; they do not make it under circumstances chosen by themselves, but under circumstances directly encountered, given and transmitted from the past” (2011, 25).

Abstract

This article is part of a group of studies on José Saramago as a reader of Karl Marx. In these pages, we ponder over the “God factor” cause, approaching it as a disturbing theme of Saramago, developed in his works over the foundation of “ideology” as a category under Marxist thought. This premise supports the conclusion that the essay “The God factor”, published in the newspaper Folha de S. Este artigo faz parte de um conjunto de estudos sobre José Saramago como leitor de Karl Marx.
