Abstract

Knowledge engineering focuses on organizing scientific information through computer programming and the creation of information networks. To map the conceptual relationships of a specialized field, it is necessary to integrate the system of concepts from related subfields into an overarching structure. Accordingly, specialized thesauri are developed and ultimately merged with one another. A meta-thesaurus is a type of overarching thesaurus that facilitates the integration of multiple existing thesauri at national and international levels and establishes reciprocal references among various scientific information databases. "Lexical databases," similar to "lexical networks," consist of a collection of vocabulary, thesauri, and dictionaries that aim to systematize the semantics of one or more natural languages. In this context, ontologies can play a foundational role in organizing technical knowledge and, in the not-too-distant future, can create a "semantic network" that is an extension of the "World Wide Web of Information," allowing for the representation of concepts belonging to different languages and cultures, free from the absolute dominance of a single language and culture.

In the present research, using the vocabulary database (a combination of scientific vocabulary from the thesauri of basic sciences) of the Iranian Research Institute for Information Science and Technology, which was selected as the linguistic corpus, and based on structural and lexical semantics theory (Liber, 2004), these words were subjected to statistical analysis. In addition to determining the frequency of each element of compound, derived, and compound-derived vocabulary, the structural patterns of scientific terms were extracted.
