Space based Data Advancement on Data Providers, Open Data and Open Knowledge Workshop 2024

Since the establishment of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), space-based data has been foundational to the development of numerous activities, initiatives, and technologies in the GEO community. With advancements in technology, many may view space-based data as a "problem solved". However, the increasing availability of vast datasets demands new technologies, methodologies, and best practices to harness their potential fully. In recent years, the GEO community has seen significant progress in adopting and advancing Open Knowledge principles. These innovations have sparked essential discussions on how these emerging concepts and technologies can support the use of space-based data across GEO initiatives. Through a diverse range of speakers covering several regions and thematic areas where GEO is active, this session will explore the current needs of the community regarding space-based data and assess how Open Knowledge practices are shaping and can further enhance the use of these data resources. The evolution of the GEO Infrastructure to better support space-based data will also be covered. By addressing the obstacles and opportunities in this evolving landscape, we aim to pave the way for more effective collaboration and utilization of space-based data and services within the GEO framework. To support these discussions and outline the following steps, we will showcase ongoing initiatives and projects, highlighting how the GEO Community is tackling these challenges and opportunities. Session moderator: Steven Ramage, CEOS Session speakers: Xiang Zhou, CAS Jean Dusart, CDSE Charles Mwangi, Kenya Space Agency (Pre-recorded video) Kofi Asare, Ghana Space Agency Joseph Tuyishimire, Digital Earth Africa
