Ethiopia Urban Expansion Initiative (UEI) Evaluation Final Report

This report evaluates the long-term impact of the Ethiopia Urban Expansion Initiative (UEI), a collaborative effort between the Ethiopian Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure and the Marron Institute of Urban Management at New York University. Conducted between 2023-2024 with funding from the Open Philanthropy Foundation, the evaluation assesses the socio-economic and infrastructural outcomes of technical assistance provided to 18 secondary cities in Ethiopia from 2013-2015. The UEI focused on training municipal officials to plan for urban growth by projecting 30-year population increases, securing arterial road grids, and protecting environmentally sensitive areas. The evaluation employed geospatial analysis, qualitative assessments, and household surveys across eight cities to measure the initiative's impact. Supporting data, and attachments 4-11 to this report, can be found in the related record "Ethiopia Urban Expansion Initiative (UEI) Household Survey and Geospatial Analysis Data" located at https://doi.org/10.58153/xwvc0-mse16
