A STUDY ON CATEGORIES OF DEPRESSED CLASSES PEOPLES WITH SPECIAL REFERNCE TO VELLORE DISTRICT

The Depressed Classes gained statutory recognition for the first time when the Government of India Act 1919 provided for the political representation of the Depressed Classes through nomination, on a number of public bodies. Classes included only the Untouchables not the tribal and uncivilized folk.. The Untouchables of India have been known by legion of terms at different times or by different terms by different people. The British administrators termed these people as Depressed Classes.
