The Double-Edged Sword Examining the Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Shopping
Online shopping, or purchasing goods and services via the internet, has evolved from a novelty into a global necessity (Laudon & Traver, 2023). This transformation is fueled by rising internet usage now over 66% globally (World Bank, 2023) and over 5.5 billion smartphone users enabling mobile commerce (GSMA, 2023). Improved digital payment systems have further simplified online transactions (OECD, 2023). The COVID-19 pandemic significantly accelerated e-commerce adoption, forcing consumers and retailers to shift online (UNCTAD, 2021). As a result, global retail e-commerce sales reached $6.3 trillion in 2024 and are projected to hit $8.1 trillion by 2026 (Statista, 2024). While offering 24/7 access and product variety (Gupta et al., 2021), online shopping raises major concerns. These include data privacy and rising cyber threats (Kshetri, 2022; Symantec, 2023), environmental issues like packaging waste and emissions (UNEP, 2022), and digital exclusion of marginalized communities (ITU, 2023).This paper combines empirical findings and theories such as technological determinism and consumer behavior (Kotler & Keller, 2022; Rogers, 2003) to evaluate both the opportunities and risks of e-commerce in today’s digital economy.
