The Ayutthaya Period "Dok Mai Phra Ruang" Coin (Large Secondary Size)

This article presents a study of a large secondary-sized Dok Mai Phra Ruang coin from the Ayutthaya period. The coin is cast in chin alloy (silvered lead with tin) and features a circular form with a central perforation surrounded by petal-like motifs. The study examines the historical context of Ayutthaya-period currency, the coin’s physical characteristics and cross-size comparisons to clarify the role and significance of the large secondary size. Analysis indicates that the coin’s dimensions, weight, material composition, casting method and surface patina are consistent with genuine Dok Mai Phra Ruang coins recovered from archaeological contexts and hoards. This research highlights the archaeological and artistic value of this coin type as evidence of Ayutthaya-period metallurgical technology and ornamental design.
