Tiered Approaches to Implement Open Science for Complex Computational Software: Implementation Ideas from the NASA SMD Modeling Community

This work described a tiered approach to implement the principles of Open Science in a reasonable way for complex computational modeling and simulation software and the data produced by them. The full implementation of Open Science principles is too challenging to implement for every model or simulation, and in many cases is not useful to do so due to the transitory nature of some of these artifacts. Providing a tiered classification system gives modelers, repositories, and funders a structure to refer to for prioritization of effort, efficient assignment of staff and resources, and justification for funding. Presentation given by Rebecca Ringuette on June 30, 2025, to the Standards working group of the Open Modeling Foundation. R. Ringuette recognizes the 2023 Jack Eddy Symposium attendees for their insightful conversations that motivated this work.
