Open NeuroSeed Project: Integrating Open Science into an Interdisciplinary Project on AI-Driven Neurotechnology and Responsibility
My project explores legal responsibility in brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs — technologies that translate brain signals into actions, often using AI. These systems offer huge potential, especially in healthcare, but they also raise difficult questions about who is responsible when something goes wrong. The new EU Product Liability Directive treats AI-based BCI software as a product, making developers legally responsible. To help solve this, we suggest two things: contracts that clearly share responsibility across all parties, and a special insurance model designed for neuro-AI technologies. Our goal is to protect users while also making the legal risks more manageable for developers.
