ASSESSMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLE MAINTENANCE AND BASIC REPAIR SKILL REQUIREMENTS OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLE DRIVERS IN BENUE STATE
The rising rate of vehicle malfunctions and road accidents in Benue State, linked to low technical proficiency among drivers, prompted this study. It assessed the motor vehicle maintenance, inspection, and basic repair skills required by commercial vehicle drivers to enhance road safety and operational efficiency. Using a descriptive survey design, data was collected from 326 drivers, selected from a population of 1,762 across Makurdi, Gboko, and Otukpo, using proportionate and incidental sampling methods. Structured questionnaires gathered information on drivers’ technical skills. Data analysis employed mean scores, standard deviations, and Z-tests at a 0.05 significance level. Findings revealed no significant differences between formally and informally trained drivers in the importance of vehicle inspection, maintenance, and basic repair skills, with (M = 3.43, SD = 0.78), (M = 3.37, SD = 0.86), and (M = 3.16, SD = 0.87), respectively. The study highlighted the critical need for structured training programs, periodic assessments, and certification processes to equip drivers with essential skills, particularly for addressing emergencies in remote areas. Limitations included reliance on self-reported data and a focus on a specific region. The findings provide actionable insights to reduce breakdowns, prevent accidents, and improve transportation efficiency.
