The Challenge of Ballast Water: A Global Environmental Priority
Abstract Ballast water, essential for the stability of ships, has become a significant vector for the transfer of invasive aquatic species, including phytoplankton and zooplankton. These organisms play vital roles in marine ecosystems, with phytoplankton contributing approximately 50% of the Earth's atmospheric oxygen through photosynthesis. The introduction of non-native species via ballast water disrupts ecosystems, threatens biodiversity, and impacts global oxygen production. This study present the severity of the ballast water problem, supported by statistical data and trends, explores potential solutions, including technological advancements and regulatory frameworks and the recent developments. The conclusion underscores the need for global cooperation, innovation, and public awareness to mitigate the risks associated with ballast water discharge
