RECONCILING FAITH AND IDENTITY: AN ETHNOMETHODOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF LGBTQIA+ MUSLIMS UTILIZING INTERSECTIONAL RECONCILIATION THEORY

This study examines the identity negotiation of LGBTQIA+ Muslims using the framework of Intersectional Reconciliation Theory, highlighting how individuals reconcile their religious beliefs with their sexual and gender identities in the context of traditional Islamic teachings and modern societal obstacles. This study utilizes a qualitative research design, employing ethnomethodology as its primary methodological framework, concentrating on the daily practices and interpretive techniques participants employ to resolve perceived identity conflicts. Data were gathered via in-depth interviews and thematically analyzed to reveal the intricate methods by which LGBTQIA+ Muslims formulate self-narratives, navigate stigma, and foster authenticity within religious and LGBTQIA+ communities. Findings indicate that participant utilizes techniques like selective religious reinterpretation, boundary establishment, community identity formation, and personal spiritual growth to manage their intricate positionalities. The research highlights the persistence and agency of LGBTQIA+ Muslims in contesting binary notions of faith and sexuality, thus enriching discussions on inclusivity within religious contexts. These findings highlight the necessity for more supportive theological discussions and communal activities that acknowledge the intersecting experiences of LGBTQIA+ Muslims. The study provides useful information for religious leaders, educators, and mental health professionals aiming to cultivate supportive environments that affirm both faith and identity.
