Protocol for a review of the state of the art in order to redefine the concept of environment in relation to chronic disease management

This protocol aims to re-evaluate the concept of environment in chronic disease management in public health and nursing. Through a literature review and conceptual analyses, the study explores how the environment, despite its abstraction, can improve the capacities of people living with a chronic disease. Introduction: The Anthropocene requires us to consider the environment as a whole, interacting with every living being. This major role leads us to question the role that the concept plays in the field of public health and nursing. Whether the environment is physical, social, material, circumstantial in terms of time or place, or even enabling, it needs to be considered when dealing with the vulnerabilities and care of people living with a chronic disease. A study of the concept in these areas is essential. Objective: To present the protocol that takes stock of the concept of environment in the way it has been considered by the nursing discipline and how it is used in the work of a number of leaders in the field of chronic disease management. Method: Literature review backed up by a meta-narrative review and analysis of conceptual models seeking to shed light on a heterogeneous thematic field. A well-considered selection of theorists from the nursing discipline and researchers who have published empirical writings related to illness. Expected results: To answer the research question ‘How does nursing define the environment with a view to contributing to the development of the capabilities of people living with a chronic illness? Conclusion: The nursing metaparadigm invokes the concept of environment, but it seems to be one of the most abstract pillars. This study will make it possible to re-analyse the place of the environment in the discipline and evoke the trends that should be explored.
