Exploring the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Transforming Citizen Science: Privacy, Data Sharing, and Open Science

Abstract This webinar, “Exploring the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Transforming Citizen Science: Privacy, Data Sharing, and Open Science,” held on February 19, 2025, brought together experts to examine how AI is reshaping citizen science through enhanced data collection, analysis, and public engagement. Moderated by Gefion Thuermer, the session featured Dilek Fraisl (IIASA & Citizen Science Global Partnership), Karen Verstraelen (Scivil, amai! project), and Etienne Serbe-Kamp (Mi3 Munich Interactive Intelligence & Backyard Brains). Dilek Fraisl explored how integrating citizen science into AI systems can address challenges such as social bias and improve sustainable development outcomes, highlighting the need for ethical governance and transparency. Karen Verstraelen presented the amai! project, which co-creates AI solutions for societal issues with direct citizen involvement, sharing practical lessons on inclusive engagement. Etienne Serbe-Kamp showcased how AI enhances citizen science in neuroscience, enabling participants to explore neural activity and electrophysiological data through interactive tools. Note: This upload includes the speakers’ presentations in PDF format as well as a record of participants’ responses collected during the interactive session.
