Assessment ofWound Healing Activity of Curcumin and Withaferin-A Combination Ointment in Wistar Albino Rats
ABSTRACTBackground: Curcumin and withaferin are phytochemicals, proven for anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. But therehas been no studies performed to understand the potency of this combination drugs. Objectives: The research directs to assessthe wound-healing efficacy of CUR – WA combination ointments at concentrations of 2.5% W/W and 5.0% W/W. Methods:Wound healing properties of CUR – WA ointments were evaluated in Wistar albino rats through excision and incision woundmodels. The extent of wound closure was measured on days 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 for the excision model. In the incision model, the decrease in wound length was determined on days 5 and 10. Results: The percentage wound closure of excision woundarea on the 15th day in animal treated with ointment formulations were compared. CUR – WA ointment of 5.0% W/W testdose showed significant wound healing activity (***p<0.0001) as compared to untreated control group. In incision woundmodel, the percentage reduction in wound length on the 5th day in animal treated with ointment formulations was compared.CUR – WA, 5.0% W/W ointment showed significant wound healing activity ((***p<0.0001) as compared to untreated controlgroup animals. Conclusion: The study revealed the effectiveness of combination of curcumin and withaferin ointment tohasten the wound healing process.
