Supplementary Materials to "Past, Present, and Future of HNR: Reflections on the Practices and Methods in Historical Network Research Based on an Online Survey"

Supplementary materials to the article "Past, Present, and Future of HNR: Reflections on the Practices and Methods in Historical Network Research Based on an Online Survey", published in the Journal of Historical Network Research 11 (2025), 42–70. The Appendix contains additional graphs, tables, and qualitative coding that are referred to in the article. The questionnaire contains the detailed questions used in the survey. Abstract Historical network research (HNR) has always been characterized by the transfer of methods and the transgression of disciplinary epistemic boundaries. While various contributions reflect the historical development of HNR as well as the epistemological implications of applying network analysis methods to historical data, current discussions place less emphasis on the practical side of HNR. By conducting an exploratory survey, we aim to contribute to a better understanding of the ways scholars actually conduct HNR, focusing on the technical aspects of the network research practices of network construction, network visualization and analysis, and data organization as well as the problems scholars experience. We identify two trends: (1) While concepts, methods, and tools that originated in Social Network Analysis (SNA) still seem to be prevalent in current HNR, there is clear evidence of expansion beyond SNA, given the diversity of research topics, interests, and methods. (2) Within this resulting broad methodical landscape, scholars need to attune the available indicators, software, and tools to their specific historical research. We conclude that difficulties in this process due to technological and methodological prerequisites could be mitigated through targeted resources.
