Developing a Semi-automatic Annotation Workflow for Historical Toponyms: Challenges and Insights from the Itinera Nova Project

In this poster, we present a workflow for the semi-automatic annotation of toponyms, currently under development in the project Itinera Nova. Itinera Nova is a Citizen Science project that aims to digitize and transcribe the aldermen's registers and account books from the city archive Leuven and to make them accessible for the general public. The registers and account books comprise a total of over 1,300,000 pages from the period 1362-1795. We will pick up on the challenges with historical place names and discuss the insights we've won during the development.

Abstract

In this poster, we present a workflow for the semi-automatic annotation of toponyms, currently under development in the project Itinera Nova. Itinera Nova is a Citizen Science project that aims to digitize and transcribe the aldermen's registers and account books from the city archive Leuven and to make them accessible for the general public. The registers and account books comprise a total of over 1,300,000 pages from the period 1362-1795. We will pick up on the challenges with historical place names and discuss the insights we've won during the development.
