African Bio-Synthetic Alliance (ABSA): Engineering Sustainable Bio-Solutions for Africa's Future
Africa, home to 17% of the world’s population and a biodiversity hotspot, stands at a crossroads of crisis and opportunity. The African Bio-Synthetic Alliance (ABSA) harnesses synthetic biology and biotechnology to engineer sustainable solutions—such as a synthetic microbial consortium to reclaim degraded lands—targeting SDGs 2 (Zero Hunger), 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), 13 (Climate Action), and 15 (Life on Land). This paper unveils ABSA’s vision to revolutionize agriculture with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, transform healthcare through affordable diagnostics for neglected diseases, and restore ecosystems via bioremediation of mining pollution. Rooted in Africa-led innovation, equitable partnerships, and rigorous ethics, ABSA aims to build a resilient bioeconomy, retain intellectual property (IP), and offer a scalable blueprint for the Global South.
