One Framework to Learn Them All: Picciano's Multimodal Model for Online Education
In his article titled "Theories and Frameworks for Online Education: Seeking an Integrated Model," Anthony G. Picciano considers three critical learning theories for establishing legitimate online education: behaviorism, cognitivism, and social constructivism. On the Multimodal Model for Online Education assumption, an integrated approach was proposed for unifying these theories and making possible "those diverse learners need" combinations. Aspects such as developing a Community of Inquiry to facilitate interaction, employing adaptive learning technologies for tailored experiences, introducing multiple media types to accommodate different learning styles, and providing opportunities for reflection and feedback to promote engagement have been stressed in this model. This synthesized theoretical framework offers Picciano's flexible model for helping educators design effective online learning experiences that respond well to the individual needs of the students.
