SOCIAL STIGMATIZATION, DISCRIMINATION, AND CHALLENGES FACED BY THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY IN CHENNAI
ABSTRACT This study explores the social stigmatization, discrimination, and mental health challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals in Chennai, aiming to understand the impact of societal rejection on their personal and professional lives. The research employs a case study methodology, allowing for an in-depth examination of the lived experiences of LGBTQ people, focusing on their struggles with societal attitudes and professional hurdles. Purposive sampling was adopted to select the respondents. Through interviews with four participants of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, the study provides rich, personal narratives that highlight the nuances of their challenges. The findings reveal deeply ingrained cultural, religious, and political attitudes that perpetuate exclusion, leading to increased rates of mental disorders, homelessness, and economic instability among the LGBTQ community. The study underscores the need for improved legal protections and social support systems to promote equality, inclusivity, and social justice. By raising awareness of these issues, the research aims to inform policies and practices that support the LGBTQ community in Chennai. The thematic analysis of the collected data identifies common themes of social stigma, discrimination, and vulnerability, contributing to the development of potential solutions for the community.
