Abstract Community pharmacies and chemist businesses in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) represent a vital link between health systems and the populations they serve. With growing demand for essential medicines, optometry services, and over-the-counter healthcare solutions, the potential of pharmacies to act as frontline health hubs is increasingly recognized. This paper explores the role of chemist businesses in strengthening health systems, the challenges and opportunities in pharmaceutical delivery, professionalism, regulatory frameworks, and innovative business models. It also discusses the potential of integrating pharmacies with primary care, optometry services, and community outreach for improved public health outcomes.
