Role of Job Stress vis-à-vis Wellbeing - Few Words About the Lifestyle of Shopkeepers
Abstract: Shopkeepers play a vital role in the socio-economic fabric of both urban and rural communities. They are responsible for managing small retail outlets, often family-run, that provide essential goods and services to local populations. This paper explores the multifaceted challenges faced by small shopkeepers, focusing on their daily routines, job-related stress, and overall wellbeing. Due to long hours and constant responsibility, shopkeepers have limited time for recreation, travel, or hobbies. This affects their work-life balance and social engagement. They face regular stress due to uncertain income, competition from online markets, rising rent, and changing customer preferences. These factors affect both mental and financial well-being. As traditional retail evolves in the face of digitalization and competition from e-commerce, shopkeepers are adapting by adopting mobile payments, inventory apps, and online ordering systems. Understanding their work, lifestyle, and challenges is essential for inclusive economic policy and small business development.
