Addressing developmental challenges through innovative solutions in the arts and social sciences: an African perspective

AbstractAfrica continues to face a range of complex developmental issues, such as economic inequality, fragile governance systems, declining moral standards, cultural fragmentation, and underperformance in education. This paper explores how innovative and cross-disciplinary strategies within the Arts and Social Sciences, particularly Political Science, Economics, Social Studies, Christian Religious Studies, and the English Language, can be effectively utilised to tackle these concerns. It presents a conceptual model that blends inclusive governance, context-sensitive economic reform, civic education, ethical renewal through religion, and the empowering role of English in global engagement. Using selected case studies from African nations, the study illustrates how these disciplines have contributed to fostering civic accountability, moral awareness, national unity, and community strength. The argument is made for a revitalised focus on these fields as essential to policy advancement and human development. The paper concludes by calling for greater institutional support in curriculum redesign, research efforts, and policymaking grounded in African contexts and international standards.
