Impact of Rainfall on Water Resources in Marathawada Region
Abstract: Surface water is inadequate in majority part of Marathwada region therefore; ground water is single source for irrigation. Net ground water availability for future irrigation is high in Nanded district therefore there is scope to increase irrigation facility through digging irrigation wells. Considering stage of ground water development Marathwada region is under safe category except Latur district indicates that, there is scope to increase agricultural productivity through well irrigation. The above stated facts of physical determinants suggest that the physical determinants, except scanty rainfall and surface water resources, are favorable for agriculture development. Most of the minor irrigation schemes become dry in summer season due to rate and distribution of the monsoon rainfall effects on the water storage capacity of the project. The high density if irrigation wells is found in Sambhajinagar and Latur districts. During the period of under review district as a whole has only 0.40 percent positive change in percentage of well irrigated area which suggest that there is need of artificial recharge of groundwater and use of drip irrigation. The negative change in well-irrigated area in Dharashiv and Beed district is a result of scarcity of rainfall and lowing of ground.
