The Study of Canal Irrigation Project in Solapur District: Geographical Perspectives
Abstract: Solapur district, which is characterized by arid and drought-prone terrain, has historically faced major challenges in agriculture due to water scarcity. For solving these areal water scarcity issues, several canal irrigation projects have been implemented using water from major rivers such as Bhima, Sina and Nira. The Ujani Dam, Sina Irrigation Project, Nira Right Canal, Sangola Branch Canal Main Irrigation Project and the proposed Swargiya Balasaheb Thackeray Upsa Irrigation Scheme have transformed the agricultural landscape by ensuring stable water supply, enabling cultivation of water-intensive crops such as sugarcane, banana and horticultural produce. These initiatives have not only increased agricultural productivity and economic stability but have also reduced dependence on erratic monsoon rainfall, improved food security and boosted rural livelihoods through employment opportunities in agriculture and agro-based industries. This research paper has contributed significantly to regional development, but challenges such as water scarcity, unbalanced distribution and infrastructure maintenance remain. Continued investment in modernization, sustainable water management, and community participation is essential to ensure the long-term success of these irrigation systems to meet the growing demands of farmers and address evolving environmental challenges. This research study highlights the transformative impacts of canal irrigation projects in Solapur district and underscores their important role in promoting agricultural resilience and rural prosperity.
