Understanding the Paradigm Shift of ULFA: From Factional Differences to the Peace Accord
Assam has witnessed separatist movements and insurgencies since India’s independence. The insurgency in the state began in 1979 with the formation of the ‘United Liberation Front of Asom’ (ULFA). ULFA has been fighting for Assam’s sovereignty since its inception. The ULFA has surpassed several stages of political upheaval since its formation. On the creation of occasions, it even operated equal parts with the state machinery. This dynamic in the political history of ULFA itself is unique and reflects the subtle and underground outfits. This paper provides an understanding of the fractional differences of the ULFA to the Peace Accord between the Government and the organization. The paper is descriptive in nature and based on both primary and secondary sources of data.
