Decoding Combinations: A Review of Analytical Approaches for Dextromethorphan and Chlorpheniramine Maleate
ABSTRACTChlorpheniramine maleate (CPM) and Dextromethorphan hydrobromide (DXM) are two common co-formulated agents in expectorant formulations, widely available as over-the-counter medications. For ensuring quality control and regulatory compliance, their simultaneous determination in various pharmaceutical dosage forms is critical. This reviewcomprises an overview of the analytical techniques reported between 2010 and 2024 for thequantification of CPM and DXM, both as single agents and combination therapies. Techniques including UV spectrophotometry, HPLC, GC, TLC, hyphenated techniques (LC-MS/MS, UHPLC-MS/MS), and capillary electrophoresis are discussed, which helps in future studies and research involving these actives.
