Major Eye Diseases in the Elderly of Buddharaksa Moral Community: Understanding, Care, and State Welfare Access
In a society where elders are revered as vessels of wisdom, preserving their eyesight is more than a medical issue it is a cultural imperative. This article focuses on three major age-related eye conditions found in rural Thailand, particularly within the Buddharaksa Moral Community: 1. Cataract 2. Glaucoma 3. Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) It outlines symptoms, risk age groups, treatments, and available benefits under Thailand’s Universal Coverage Scheme (UCS), Social Security Scheme (SSS), and Civil Servant Medical Benefit Scheme (CSMBS). Emphasis is placed on practical distinctions between lens types (e.g., monofocal vs multifocal), the importance of early screening, and community-supported transportation and rehabilitation services. The article also proposes community-driven solutions under the Buddharaksa model, advocating for collaborative care that integrates spiritual, medical, and governmental dimensions to preserve not just sight but moral insight.
