Inherited Weakness: Community Lessons and the Hidden Genetics Behind Local Cases Mistaken for Polio
This article draws from fieldwork within moral Buddhist communities in rural Thailand, where children from specific kinship lines develop muscle weakness or gait abnormalities by late childhood, often progressing to severe deformities in adulthood. Despite local assumptions of polio, evidence suggests potential hereditary neuromuscular disorders. The study raises ethical, medical, and spiritual questions about early screening, community awareness, and support systems for families affected by hidden genetic conditions.
