The geological excursions of the Alpine School of Morbegno: the valley floor of the Valtellina

Morbegno is the main urban center of the Lower Valtellina and is home to the Istituto Comprensivo 2 Damiani, which in 2017 joined the Interreg Alpine Space – YOUrALPS project, aimed at developing a new school model focused on the environmental and socio-economic dynamics of the Alps. In 2020, the lower secondary school of the institute obtained the European Alpine School certification, establishing a dedicated educational track. The main goal is to reconnect students with their local territory, raising awareness of the characteristics, resources, and opportunities of the mountain environment. This text describes a geological and geomorphological excursion organized by the Alpine School, focused on observing significant landslide phenomena and their effects along a route that follows the valley floor of the Valtellina. A summarized version of this text, in Italian, was published in Geologicamente, a science magazine of the Italian Geological Society (Issue 16, March 2025, here is the online version).
