Innovative Vertical Vegetable Farming for Environmental Conservation and Food Security
Vertical vegetable farming is a new kind of agricultural technology that entails the production of crops in vertically stacked layers in a controlled cultivation environment. The method yields high efficiency in the use of space, land and water consumption as well as increasing agricultural output. It is water-conserving, eradicates soil erosion and uses hydroponics and aeroponics. Vertical farming is also economically beneficial, since companies will have higher productivity and lower labour costs. In social terms, it enhances food security and serves to advance urban agriculture. Although activities such as high initial investment, energy consumption are associated with vertical farming, factors such as technology improve the existence of vertical farming. With the increasing urbanisation, vertical farming has a great future to add to sustainable agriculture and food security and is a potential solution to food production in future.
