AN ACTION RESEARCH IN DOING SOLID WASTE SEGREGATION IN SITIO MALAKING PARANG, BARANGAY SAN JUAN, TAYTAY CITY, RIZAL

Saving lives by preventing the severe impacts of floods through sustainable household solid waste segregation is of utmost importance. It is perceived as simple but not a habit of many Filipino residents. To understand the current level of knowledge and implementation of the effort, the researchers conducted action research among the selected collaborators in Sitio Malaking Parang, San Juan, Taytay City, Rizal. They tested the interventions through lectures and understandable and straightforward visual communication materials in Cycle 1 and the reinforcement through contests and prizes in Cycle 2. They observed that the interventions through lectures and understandable and simple visual communication materials about the nature, process, and benefits of household solid waste segregation in Cycle 1 improved the selected residents' understanding and knowledge. In contrast, the reinforcement through contests and prizes as simple incentives in Cycle 2 engaged the selected residents, considering the simple prizes and impact on their pro-environmental reputation to the habitual conduct of household solid waste segregation from December 2023 to the date of evaluation in June 2024. Continuous reminders and monitoring are expected to sustain the achieved level of discipline for said efforts.
