MULTISENSORY INSTRUCTION (MSI): AN APPROACH IN ENHANCING NUMERACY SKILLS FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM
This study explores the effectiveness of Multisensory Instruction (MSI) in enhancing numeracy skills among children with autism by examining the lived experiences of teachers in Camarines Norte. Using a qualitative, phenomenological approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically with NVivo software. Findings revealed that MSI, which integrates visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic elements, significantly improves engagement, comprehension, and skill retention by aligning with students' sensory preferences and cognitive styles. Teachers emphasized the effectiveness of hands-on materials, structured routines, and digital tools in making abstract mathematical concepts more concrete. Observation-based assessment emerged as the primary evaluation method, with real-time monitoring and structured rubrics playing a crucial role in measuring progress. Additionally, the study introduced "A+SLIDES," a digital intervention that enhances numeracy skills through interactive, multisensory learning. The study concludes that MSI is an effective instructional approach for fostering numeracy development in children with autism, reducing learning barriers, and promoting inclusive education. Based on these findings, recommendations include professional development for educators, investment in MSI resources, and further research on its long-term impact across different educational settings.
