Water Management and its allocation: Special reference of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)

Abstract: Mumbai water distribution management is a key function of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and is responsible for ensuring that millions of residents have access to sustainable and equitable water supply. This report investigates the policies behind BMC’s water distribution, such as the Water Supply Master Plan, 24x7 Water Supply Project, and rainwater harvesting programs. It highlights several key challenges such as aging infrastructure, inequitable distribution, illegal connections, contamination risks, and dependence on monsoon rainfall. Solutions to the problem, such as upgrading water systems and using smart water management techniques, alternative water sources, and public understanding campaigns, are also laid out in the report. Only by effective policy implementation and timely help from technology will we able to meet the growing water demands of Mumbai sustainably over the long term
