CLEANING POLLUTED SOILS WITH BIOREMEDIATION
Abstract With the growth of the world population, the level of land pollution increases. Nowadays, waste management resulting from the rapid growth of industries such as food, health care and automobile is of great importance. The accumulation of pollutants in soils has serious impacts not only on soil fertility and ecosystem functions, but also on human and animal health through the food chain. Bioremediation, a method based on the use of microorganisms to prevent toxicity and breakdown of environmental pollutants, is becoming an important biotechnological approach for the elimination and prevention of environmental pollution. This paper presents a review on the cleanup of contaminated soils with the bioremediation method, which is more cost-effective than other methods. However, the long cleaning time and the inability to achieve effective results at high pollutant concentrations limit the applicability of this method.
