Drop Weight Impact Behavior of Kevlar/Kenaf/Graphene-Reinforced Polymer Matrix Composites.
The selection and enhancement of material properties play a crucial role in engineering applications, with material science serving as the foundation for optimizing material performance. Among advanced materials, composite materials are of particular significance due to their tailored properties achieved through the combination of different constituents. In this study, a novel composite material was developed by reinforcing Kenaf and Kevlar fibers with a vinyl ester resin matrix, incorporating Graphene as a reinforcing additive at varying concentrations (0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%). The fabrication was carried out using the hand layup process, and the composite specimens were precisely machined to ASTM standards (300 × 300 mm, 3 mm thickness) using a water jet cutting machine. To evaluate the impact resistance, drop-weight impact testing was conducted. The results indicate a substantial improvement in the mechanical properties of the developed composite, demonstrating the effectiveness of Graphene reinforcement in enhancing impact resistance. This study underscores the potential of hybrid composites for high-performance applications requiring superior mechanical strength and durability.
