Effect of Video-Aid-Simulation Using Hook's Model on Performance in Human Circulatory System Among Secondary School Students in Gusau Metropolis, Zamfara State

Abstract This study investigated the effect of video-aid-simulation using hook’s model on performance in human circulatory system among secondary school students in Gusau metropolis, Zamfara State. Quasi experimental using pre-test, post-test non-randomized control group design was adopted for the study. The target population was 5,896 Senior Secondary School class two (SS-2) biology students with a sample size of 139 students. Purposive sampling technique was used to select two schools for the study. Circulatory System Performance Test (CSPT) was used as instrument for data collection and it was validated by four experts. To ensure the reliability of the instrument, pilot testing was conducted using test-retest method with the reliability coefficient of 0.84. Two research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation and two null hypotheses were tested using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. Result of the study reveals that, the instructional use of video-aid-simulation improve students’ performance at posttest than the lecture method with a mean score of 80.54%±11.09, 58.87%±9.08 and mean gain of 57.68% and 35.21% respectively. The Result also shows that, gender does not influence students’ academic performance in human circulatory system when taught with video-aid-simulation with a mean difference of 0.76. Hence, gender friendly. Based on the findings of this study it was concluded that, instructional use of video-aid-simulation is more effective in improving students’ academic performance than lecture method without significant gender effect. It was therefore recommended that, video-aid-simulation should be integrated into teaching biology especially on difficult abstract concepts. Keywords: Video-aid-simulation, Hook’s Model, Academic Performance and Human Circulatory System.
