A Comparative Study of Progress Tourism in Pune and Ahilyanagar Districts
Abstract: Tourism is a key driver of socio-economic development, significantly boosting regional economies, cultural exchange, and job creation. This study compares tourism development in Pune and Ahilyanagar districts, focusing on their growth paths, challenges, and opportunities. Pune, known for its historical sites, educational institutions, and growing IT industry, has become a popular destination for domestic and international tourists. With strong infrastructure, good urban planning, and supportive government policies, Pune successfully combines tradition and modernity, offering attractions like historic forts and modern conference centers. In contrast, Ahilyanagar, with its rich cultural and historical heritage, has struggled to develop its tourism potential due to poor infrastructure and limited promotion. The district mainly relies on pilgrimage tourism, which limits its reach and growth. However, Ahilyanagar has untapped potential with unique cultural attractions, traditional crafts, and natural landscapes that could appeal to a wider range of tourists if properly marketed. The study compares tourism indicators such as tourist numbers, revenue, and employment in both districts, showing that Pune benefits from better infrastructure, accommodations, and a strong hospitality sector. Ahilyanagar’s tourism remains underdeveloped, with economic benefits mostly limited to seasonal income from pilgrimage visitors. The research also highlights the importance of government policies and private sector involvement. Pune’s success is driven by effective tourism policies, while Ahilyanagar faces challenges due to bureaucratic inefficiencies and limited resources.
