Malayan Pit Viper in Cattle Pens: Hidden Threats in Rural Livestock Enclosures
The presence of Malayan pit vipers (Calloselasma rhodostoma) in cattle and buffalo pens is a common yet often overlooked threat in rural Thailand. This article analyzes the ecological and behavioral factors that attract snakes to these environments. Livestock pens frequently harbor small animals such as rats, frogs, and toads, which serve as prey for snakes. Moreover, the damp, quiet, and warm conditions offer ideal hiding spots for reptiles. The article also highlights seasonal patterns especially during the rainy season when snake activity increases due to mating behavior and the search for shelter. Understanding these patterns is vital for rural communities to enhance safety and implement preventive measures.
