Circle Wise Development and Management of Irrigation in Drought-Prone Areas: A Case Study of Parner Tahsil, Ahmednagar District in 1990-91 to 2015-16
Abstract This research focuses on the critical role of sustainable irrigation in Parner Tahsil, a drought-prone region, highlighting the significant variations in canal, well, and tank irrigation across different circles. The findings emphasize the increasing importance of alternative irrigation sources such as wells, tube wells, tanks, and percolation projects. From 1990-91 to 2015-16, there was a steady rise in the use of these sources, with well irrigation expanding from 7.72% to 15.70% and tank irrigation increasing from 1.02% to 3.97%. Additionally, irrigation intensity saw a 21.90% growth, with high levels observed in circles like Nighoj and Wade Gavhan, while others, such as Palshi and Supa, recorded lower levels. The study underscores the need for targeted interventions to improve irrigation infrastructure in underperforming areas like Supa, Parner, and Bhalavani. The growing reliance on diverse irrigation methods illustrates the region's efforts to counter water scarcity and boost agricultural productivity. To further mitigate the impacts of drought, it calls for sustainable watershed management practices, efficient water use, and collaborative efforts among stakeholders to ensure equitable access to water resources across all circles. These strategies are vital for enhancing food security, livelihoods, and resilience in Parner Tahsil.
